SPELL MEAN 5: Program Name: Spelling Mean 5 Written by: Upgraded by: Size: 50 blocks This program is an exercise dealing with synonyms. The idea is to match words which have similar meanings. The students will receive an interim score after each set of ten question. At the end of the program, an overall summary of the scores will be displayed. At present, this program is equipped to do 3 sets of ten questions each. You do have the capability to change the number of sets and this is shown under MODIFICATIONS in the MENU. This particular program is designed for Grade Five students and it can be used individually or with small groups. The object of this exercise is to match a word with another word which has a similar meaning. After every ten questions, you will be told your score for that set, and at the end, you will get an overall score. Example ------- ** middle ** 1)war 2)law 3)bag 4)center 5)at Look at the word on the left and try to find a word in the list which has a similar meaning. Once you have decided, enter your choice and RETURN. For the above example, the correct choice is 4. Really easy! Note: To advance from one question to the next, press the SPACE bar. Modification of program... With this program, there are two options which can be incorporated: 1) changing the type of words used. 2) the number of sets of ten questions that the student must do. CHANGING WORDS -------------- To change the words, you must change the 30 DATA statements. Each statement contains the words used in 1 question and is set up in the following manner: 1) Each DATA statement has a distinct line number. To replace the questions already in the program, start at 4000 with increments of 10 each time. 2) Each line number must be followed by the word DATA. 3) After DATA comes the words in the question. The word to be matched is always the first word and the correct answer is always the second in the DATA statement. 4) All words must be separated by a single comma. Make sure that there are no periods, commas, etc., after the last word in the DATA statement. 5) Be sure that each DATA statement has exactly six words. Example ------- 4000 DATA fowl, bird,it,hot, sit, book 4010 DATA : : 6090 DATA NOTE: fowl is the word to be matched. bird is the correct choice. The other 4 words are used as dummy words in the question. NUMBER OF SETS -------------- This is changed as follows: 1) Type in 1025 ss=_ and replace the blank with the desired number of sets. At present, there are three sets. 2) Take the number and multiply it by ten and that will be the number of DATA statements needed. 3) For more DATA, use the method under CHANGING WORDS, but start your numbers at 5000 instead of 4000. SPEED READ: Program Name: Speed Read Written by: Upgraded by: Size: 9 blocks Program to improve reading speed and comprehension. READABILITY: Program Name: Readability Written by: Upgraded by: Size: 20 blocks This is a test of readability based on ease of understanding and human interest content. These factors are determined by form- ulae provided by R. Flesch in his book 'The Art of Readable Writing'. The program does not consider sentence structure, grammar, spelling, or coher- ence of content. It evaluates only syllable count (90% of vowel count); word count, and sentence count. The human interest determination is based on the ratio of 'personal' words to total syllables. These ratings will aid any writer in tailoring his text to his intended audience. This program is adapted from one pro- vided by Al Gerbens in the Feb. 1978 issue of -Kilobaud- FLASHER: Program Name: Flasher Written by: D.S.
